White elephant

In ancient Siam (Thailand), rare white elephants were considered sacred and could not be put to work. Kings would reportedly gift them to courtiers they wished to ruin, since the recipient was obligated to care for the expensive animal without being able to use it productively. The term now means a burdensome possession.
