Wild goose chase

Originally, this had nothing to do with chasing geese. Shakespeare used it in "Romeo and Juliet" (1597) to describe a type of horse race where riders had to follow the leader's unpredictable course, much like wild geese flying in formation. Over time, the meaning shifted to any hopeless or futile pursuit.
