What is a Cryptogram?
A cryptogram is a classic word puzzle where a short piece of text, often a famous quote or phrase, is encrypted using a simple substitution cipher. In a substitution cipher, each letter of the alphabet is replaced by another letter consistently throughout the text. For example, if "A" represents "T", then every "A" in the puzzle actually means "T". Your goal is to reverse-engineer the cipher and reveal the hidden message.
How to Play and Win
If you're new to cryptograms, staring at a jumble of letters can feel intimidating. However, with a few basic strategies, you'll be cracking codes like a master codebreaker in no time:
- Start with One-Letter Words: In English, the only common one-letter words are "A" and "I". If you see a single isolated letter, it's almost certainly one of these two.
- Look for Apostrophes: Apostrophes often indicate contractions or possessives. Letters after an apostrophe are usually "S", "T", "D", "M", "LL", or "RE". If you see a single letter following an apostrophe, "S" or "T" are your best bets.
- Identify Common Small Words: The most frequently used three-letter word in English is "THE". Look for a repeating three-letter pattern—it's highly likely to be "THE". "AND" is another common one. For two-letter words, "OF", "TO", "IN", "IT", "IS", and "BE" appear frequently.
- Spot Double Letters: English words often contain double letters. "LL", "EE", "SS", "OO", and "TT" are quite common. If you notice a double letter at the end of a word, "LL" or "SS" are strong candidates.
- Use Letter Frequencies: The most common letters in the English language are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R, D, L, U. If a particular encrypted letter appears very frequently throughout the puzzle, it's likely a vowel (especially E) or a common consonant like T or S.
Using Hints and Tools
We provide a couple of built-in tools to help you when you get stuck. You have up to three Hints available per puzzle. Using a hint will automatically reveal the correct letter for the currently selected cell, filling in all matching letters across the board. If you've made a few guesses and things aren't quite lining up, the Remove Wrong button will clear out any incorrect letters you've entered, leaving only your correct guesses intact. Remember, your final score will be adjusted based on how many hints and wrong guesses you accumulate.
