On cloud nine

The origin of this expression for extreme happiness is debated. One theory links it to the U.S. Weather Bureau's 1896 classification of clouds, where Cloud 9 (cumulonimbus) was the tallest and most impressive type, reaching heights of 30,000 to 40,000 feet. Being on the highest cloud suggested being at the peak of happiness.
