Read between the lines

This phrase for discerning a hidden meaning originated from a simple cryptographic technique. Secret messages were sometimes written in invisible ink between the visible lines of an ordinary letter. The recipient would heat or chemically treat the paper to reveal the concealed text. By the mid-19th century, the phrase was used figuratively.
