Red herring

This term for a misleading clue comes from the practice of training hunting dogs. Strong-smelling smoked herrings, which turn red during the curing process, were reportedly dragged across trails to train hounds to follow the correct scent despite distractions. By the early 19th century, the phrase was used figuratively to mean a diversionary tactic.
