Mum's the word

This phrase meaning "keep quiet" dates to the 14th century. "Mum" is not a reference to mothers but to the humming sound "mmm" made with closed lips — essentially, sealed lips. Shakespeare used it in "Henry VI, Part 2," and it has remained a common way of saying "say nothing about this" ever since.
