Phrase Origin

Hat trick

Originally a cricket term, this phrase dates to 1858 when bowler H.H. Stephenson took three wickets in three consecutive deliveries. His club rewarded him with a hat bought through a collection. The term spread to other sports, most notably hockey and football, where scoring three goals in one game earns a "hat trick."
