Show your true colors

This phrase about revealing one's real character comes from naval warfare. Ships would sometimes fly false flags to approach an enemy without detection, but the rules of engagement required them to hoist their true national flag — their "true colors" — before opening fire. Showing your true colors meant revealing your actual allegiance.
