Rob Peter to pay Paul

This phrase for solving one problem by creating another may originate from the rivalry between St. Peter's Cathedral in Westminster and St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Funds were allegedly redirected from one church to repair the other during the reign of Henry VIII. The expression was already in use by the 14th century.
