While often attributed to 19th-century street thieves who would trip victims by pulling their legs to rob them, the actual origin is uncertain. The phrase meaning to joke with someone or tease them playfully first appeared in print in the 1880s and may simply be a humorous image of physical foolery causing someone to stumble.
