Jump on the bandwagon

In 19th-century America, political campaigns used bandwagons — decorated horse-drawn wagons carrying a band — to attract attention during parades. As a candidate gained popularity, more politicians would literally jump onto the bandwagon to show their support. P.T. Barnum popularized the concept, and by the 1890s it was a common political metaphor.
