Break the ice

Originating from the era of commercial sailing, port cities would send small ships to break the ice in frozen waterways so that trading vessels could pass through. Metaphorically, it came to mean initiating conversation or easing social awkwardness, a usage popularized by Sir Thomas North's 1579 translation of Plutarch.
