Blood is thicker than water

Ironically, the full original phrase may have meant the opposite of how it is used today. Some scholars argue the complete saying was "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb," meaning bonds formed through shared experience outweigh family ties. However, the shortened version emphasizing family loyalty has been dominant since at least the 12th century.
